Saunders Graphic

A Saunders graphic is a plot of the dth base-b digits of a function f(x,y) as a function of x and y.

SaundersGraphics2

The plots above show Saunders graphics for the functions f(x,y)=R[sin(x+iy)], I[sin(x+iy)], R[cos(x+iy)], and I[cos(x+iy)] in base b=2 for digits d=1 to 3.

SaundersGraphics10

Similarly, the plots above show Saunders graphics for the same functions in base b=10 for digits d=1 and 2.

Saunders' original paper (Saunders 1972) considered slightly more general operations. Unfortunately, it is also rather difficult to read. Since the paper was written before the advent of fast computers and high-resolution displays, it plotted the resulting patterns as a matrix of printed characters. Saunders' original term for this sort of plot was therefore "character map."
